09/04/2007 6:24 PM Alert

Over the Labor Day Weekend we had the pleasure of running a trip for Jo and Will Verhappen of Norfolk VA.  Jo and Will were a Grandfather - Grandson team and wanted to target several inshore species, including flounder.  With this in mind, we started the morning working the ocean side of the CBBT, but were quick to adapt to the conditions and found the pylons and span to be more productive:

Above is a photo of Will holding the 1st catch of the day, a Sea Bass measuring just under the 12 inch minimum size limit.  Our 1st Mate, Carl gave Will a few pointers on Rod and Reel management.  Will was quick to listen and act on this and did a fine job throughout the day!  Pretty work, Will!

We joked that if Will sat on the Sea Bass, it might make it a bit longer. But after consideration and inspection, it appeared both needed to grow more and it might not be so good for either. So, back he went!  (The Sea Bass that is).

As we continued to work the span, we found structure holding fish and within several passes and 1 missed attempt, Jo boated the first Flounder of the trip:

Way to go, Jo! A round of "high fives" ensued and everyone focused more as we found the conditions improving.  We continued to work the CBBT until the tide slacked and our final count of fish at that point was 4 Flounder, 2 misses, 1 Oyster toad, 1 blow toad and 3 Sea Bass.

On the turn of the tide and to make the day fun, Jo and Will decided they wanted to go for another species and we decided to target Blues.  As we worked the rips around the Islands, we put them on fish in short order.  Jo was the first to hook up with a Blue and Carl, Team ReelTime's 1st mate and he work together to boat it with ease.  Then, the next Blue on went to will and he did a fantastic job of handling the rod, both keeping the rod tip up and keeping pressure on the fish:

After this, the fun continued and are guests had multiple hookups, a missed attempt and one Chinese Fire Drill where Jo and Will went back to back with a hook up each, then a double header.

I think it was at this point, that Jo formally gave me the title, "El Capitaino"!  Finally a chopper blue bite the terminal tackle so hard, it severed the leader.  By that time it was getting late so we headed back to the dock with a final tally of 5 nice Blue Fish for the table:

Overall, it was a beautiful day on the water for Guests, Crew and Captain, with good action, nice weather, calm seas and great fellowship!

Tight Lines and Good Luck Fishing,

"El Capitaino",  Fletcher
